What is MSME / Udyam Registration?

MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) Registration now officially called Udyam Registration is a government recognition certificate issued by the Ministry of MSME under the MSMED Act, 2006 as updated by the Atmanirbhar Bharat package (2020).

Any business manufacturer, trader, retailer, or service provider can register and instantly gain access to India's most powerful set of business benefits: zero-collateral bank loans, protection against delayed payments, priority in government tenders, subsidized interest rates, and much more. The Udyam Registration Number (URN) and Udyam Certificate serve as your business's official identity for all MSME-linked government schemes from PMEGP, CGTMSE, TReDS to Startup India linkages.

Why This Matters Right Now: The government has mandated that from FY 2024–25, all buyers who purchase from MSMEs must make payments within 45 days. Non-compliance attracts tax penalties under Sec 43B(h) of the Income Tax Act giving registered MSMEs unprecedented leverage.

Frequently Asked Questions - MSME / Udyam

Everything you need to know before registering your MSME with SSATAX.

Udyog Aadhar was the old MSME registration system (now discontinued). Udyam Registration replaced it in July 2020 under a completely new portal. Udyam is linked to both Aadhaar and PAN, uses auto-populated income/investment data from ITR and GSTN, and offers more comprehensive benefits. If you have an old Udyog Aadhar, you must migrate to Udyam to continue accessing MSME schemes. SSATAX provides free migration assistance.
Yes, the government portal is free. However, most people make critical errors wrong NIC code selection (which limits scheme eligibility), incorrect investment/turnover declaration (which can cause misclassification), or Aadhaar-PAN mismatch errors. SSATAX ensures zero errors, assigns the most beneficial NIC codes for your business, and provides post-registration loan scheme advisory benefits you cannot get by registering yourself. Our professional fee is the best investment you'll make for your MSME.
No Udyam Registration has lifetime validity. There is no renewal required. However, you must update your Udyam details annually (turnover and investment figures) when they change category. SSATAX reminds you when updates are needed and handles them for you.
Absolutely yes. Udyam Registration covers both manufacturing AND service sector businesses. Investment in equipment (computers, tools, instruments) and annual turnover are the criteria. IT companies, consultants, chartered accountants, doctors, architects, restaurants, educational institutions all can and should register as MSME. The same investment and turnover limits apply to both sectors.
From FY 2023–24, if a buyer (company/firm) purchases goods/services from a registered MSME and does not pay within 45 days (or the agreed credit period, whichever is earlier), the buyer cannot claim that payment as a deduction in their Income Tax return until actually paid. This effectively forces large companies to pay their MSME vendors on time a game-changer for cash flow. This benefit is only available to Udyam-registered businesses.
Yes. Any legal entity Proprietorship, Partnership, LLP, Private Limited Company, Public Limited Company, Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), Self Help Group, Co-operative Society can register as MSME. For companies and LLPs, the PAN of the entity is required along with the Aadhaar of an authorized signatory.
One Udyam Registration is issued per PAN number. However, a single Udyam registration can cover all business activities (manufacturing + services) under multiple NIC codes there is no need to file separate registrations for different activities of the same enterprise.
No, GST registration is not mandatory for Udyam registration. Businesses below the GST threshold (₹20 lakh for services, ₹40 lakh for goods) can still register on Udyam. However, if your business is registered for GST, the Udyam portal will auto-fetch your turnover data from GSTN making your registration more accurate and credible.
If your business grows beyond the medium enterprise threshold (investment over ₹50 crore OR turnover over ₹250 crore), it will no longer qualify as MSME. You must update your Udyam details, and the registration will be marked as "graduated" ceasing to be MSME. During any financial year, your status is determined by the limits crossed in the preceding year. SSATAX monitors and advises you on category changes.
Yes, your Udyam Certificate is the primary eligibility document for CGTMSE (collateral-free loans up to ₹2 crore), MUDRA loans (up to ₹10 lakh), and Priority Sector Lending from banks. Banks are mandated to give priority to MSME applications and cannot deny loans without valid reason. SSATAX provides loan application guidance and helps you approach the right banks with the right scheme.
